This is a book about restoring connections: between the public and private worlds, between the individual and the community, between men and women. İn this landmark study of trauma, now with a new afterword, Judith Lewis Herman, psychiatrist and award-winning author, makes the revolutionary link between the "heroic" suffering of men in war and political struggle and the degraded suffering of women who are victims of rape, incest and domestic violence. Herman repeatedly challenges established orthodoxies, identifies a new diagnostic category for those suffering from "hidden" traumas and proposes a ground-breaking recovery programme that favours a process of reintegration to one of catharsis. A deeply compassionate and readable work, Trauma and Recovery is required reading for all those who seek deeper understanding of the psychology of men and women.

Having come to terms with the traumatic past, the survivor faces the task of creating a future. She has mourned the old self that the trauma destroyed; now she must develop a new self. Her relationships have been tested and forever changed by the trauma; now she must develop new relationships. The old beliefs that gave meaning to her life have been challenged; now she must find a new sustaining faith. These are the tasks of the third stage of recovery. In accomplishing this work, the survivor reclaims her world.

Once we got out, we we're suddenly confronted with all these problems... Ridiculous problems - doorknobs, for instance. İ had no reflex any longer to reach for the knobs of doors. İ hadn't had to - hadn't been allowed to - for over 13 years. I'd come to a close door and find myself momentarily stymied - İ couldn't remember what to do next. Or how to make a dark room light. How to work, pay bills, shop, visit friends, answer questions. My daughter tells me to do this or that, and one problem İ can handle, two İ can handle, but when the third request comes İ can hear her voice but my head is lost in the clouds.
