Truly deserving of the accolade Modern Classic, Donna Tartt's cult bestseller The Secret History is a remarkable achievement - incredibly compelling, dramatic and playful. Under the influence of their charismatic classics professor, a group of clever, eccentric misfits at an elite New England college discover a way of thinking and living that is a world away from the humdrum existence of their contemporaries. But when they go beyond the boundaries of normal morality their lives are changed profoundly and for ever.
Olvasói vélemények összefoglalója
Readers broadly describe The Secret History as an immersive, unsettling reading experience, though opinions vary on how successfully it delivers on its considerable reputation. Its strongest features are the dark, claustrophobic atmosphere, richly developed relationships, morally complicated characters, and Donna Tartt’s elegant, highly absorbing prose. Many readers found its blend of literary ambition, philosophy, classical studies, and psychological tension unusually memorable.
The main criticisms concern the slow pace, very long chapters, and stretches that some found overly elaborate or repetitive. Several readers also struggled to sympathize with the characters or felt that the book’s bleakness and lack of clear moral resolution created emotional distance, while others considered that discomfort central to its power. Overall, it seems best suited to patient readers who enjoy slow-burn literary fiction, atmospheric dark academia, and stories that continue to provoke thought long after reading.

A titkos történet
Donna Tartt
