Oh! Mamma, how spiritless, how tame was Edward's manner in reading to us last night! I felt for my sister most severely. Yet she bore it with so much composure, she seemed scarcely to notice it. I could hardly keep my seat. Spirited and impulsive, Marianne Dashwood is the complete opposite to her controlled and sensible sister, Elinor. When it comes to matters of the heart, Marianne is passionate and romantic and soon falls for the charming, but unreliable Mr Willoughby. Elinor, in contrast, copes stoically with the news that her love, Edward Ferrars is promised to another. It is through their shared experiences of love that both sisters come to learn that the key to a successful match comes from finding the perfect mixture of rationality and feeling.

Olvasói vélemények összefoglalója
Readers broadly admire Sense and Sensibility for its elegant prose, refined humor, and thoughtful exploration of the tension between reason and emotion. Many found it warm, romantic, emotionally engaging, and especially memorable for the contrast between its two central sisters and the strength of their relationship.
The period atmosphere, social conventions, family dynamics, and Austen’s subtle irony were frequent highlights, while the layered misunderstandings and carefully revealed information kept many readers curious. Some readers found the long sentences, formal language, and drawn-out descriptions difficult or slow to get through, and a few felt the secondary characters could be irritating or that the novel was less compelling than Austen’s other work. Overall, it is best suited to readers who enjoy character-driven historical romance, witty social observation, and a measured, classic reading experience.
