Credence is widely described as an intense, provocative, and highly divisive read rather than a conventional romance. Many readers were drawn in by Penelope Douglas’s compelling prose, strong emotional tension, and exploration of loneliness, grief, trauma, attachment, and self-discovery. The isolated mountain setting and vivid descriptions were especially praised for creating an immersive, almost tangible atmosphere.

At the same time, the taboo relationship dynamics and frequent explicit scenes made the book uncomfortable or difficult to accept for some readers, while others felt the erotic content overshadowed the psychological themes.
