When four graduates from a small Massachusetts college move to New York to make their way, they're broke, adrift, and buoyed only by their friendship and ambition. There is kind, handsome Willem, an aspiring actor; JB, a quick-witted, sometimes cruel Brooklyn-born painter seeking entry to the art world; Malcolm, a frustrated architect at a prominent firm; and withdrawn, brilliant, enigmatic Jude, who serves as their centre of gravity. Over the decades, their relationships deepen and darken, tinged by addiction, success, and pride. Yet their greatest challenge, each comes to realize, is Jude himself, by midlife a terrifyingly talented litigator yet an increasingly broken man, his mind and body scarred by an unspeakable childhood, and haunted by what he fears is a degree of trauma that he'll not only be unable to overcome - but that will define his life for ever. Part of the Picador Collection, a new series showcasing the best of modern literature.
Olvasói vélemények összefoglalója
Many readers found A Little Life profoundly moving, memorable, and emotionally overwhelming, with several describing it as one of the most difficult yet rewarding books they have read. Its exploration of trauma, empathy, suffering, and friendship left a lasting impression, and readers often felt deeply connected to Jude. Some praised the writing as poetic and emotionally powerful, while others noted that parts of the prose can feel detached despite the intensity of the material.
The book’s considerable length, slow beginning, and deliberately painful subject matter were frequent obstacles, with some readers finding it excessively bleak or emotionally manipulative. Its depictions of violence and abuse require a strong stomach, and one edition was also criticized for numerous typographical errors. Overall, A Little Life is best suited to readers seeking an intense, challenging, and deeply affecting experience rather than a light or easy read.

A Little Life
Yanagihara Hanya
I will forever think about Jude every day of my life. This is by far, the saddest novel I have ever read. Everyone needs to read this book to fully under What empathy feels like. The true heartbreak and trauma one person alone can experience in a single lifetime. X = X.

Az egyik legnehezebb, legfelkavaróbb de egyben legjobb könyv, amit valaha olvastam.
